How to Put the Front and Back of Your ID Card into One PDF (Free, Safe Steps)

Banks, employers, and universities often ask for a copy of your ID with both sides in a single PDF. You do not need a scanner. A phone camera and a free converter are enough. Because an ID copy is sensitive, this guide also covers how to share it safely.

Before You Start: Check What Is Required

Read the request carefully. Ask yourself: do they want one PDF with both sides, what is the maximum file size, and do they need a color photo or a scan? Following the exact instructions avoids having to redo the file.

Step 1: Take Clear Photos of Both Sides

Place the card on a flat, dark, plain surface.

Use daylight and turn off the flash, which causes glare on laminated cards.

Make sure all four corners are visible.

Photograph the front, then the back, from the same distance and in the same direction.

Step 2: Check Each Photo

Zoom in and confirm that the numbers and text are readable, no corner is cut off, and no finger covers any detail. Retake any photo that is blurry. A readable copy matters more than a small file.

Step 3: Reduce the File Size If There Is a Limit

Many upload portals allow only 1 to 2 MB in total. In our own test, a 3.46 MB phone photo became 1.40 MB at 80% quality. Two such photos would still be about 2.8 MB, so you may need to compress each one before converting. Keep the text readable.

Step 4: Convert Both Photos Into One PDF

Open the image to PDF converter and select the front and back photos.

Convert and download the PDF.

Note how our tool works: it puts each photo on its own page, so the front is page 1 and the back is page 2. If a form needs both sides on the same page, paste the two photos onto one page in a word processor and export that page as a PDF.

Name the file clearly, for example Name_ID_Copy.pdf.

Step 5: Open the PDF and Check It

Open the finished file and confirm that both pages are there, in the right order, and the text is sharp. If a page appears rotated, rotate the photo in your gallery editor (or take a screenshot of it) and convert again. If the order is wrong, convert again and select the front photo first.

Protect Yourself: Safety Tips for ID Copies

Send your ID copy only to organizations you trust, through their official portal or email.

Write the purpose and date on the copy, for example "For bank account opening only, [date]." This makes reuse harder.

Ask whether partially hiding some digits is acceptable for your purpose.

Never post ID photos on social media or in public group chats.

Do not leave copies in shared folders or public cloud links, and delete the downloaded files when you are done.

Our converter builds the PDF in your browser and does not upload your photos to our server. Even so, avoid unfamiliar sites for ID documents.

Common Problems and Fixes

The text is blurry: retake the photo in better light and avoid digital zoom.

The file is too large: compress each photo more, but keep the numbers readable.

Pages are in the wrong order: convert again and select the photos in order.

A page looks sideways: rotate the photo before converting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put the front and back on the same page?

Our converter gives each photo its own page. For one page, combine them in a document editor first, then save as PDF.

What size should the PDF be?

Check the portal's limit. If there is none, keep it small enough to email, and make sure the text stays readable.

Is it safe to convert my ID online?

Choose a tool that processes files in your browser, and share the final PDF only with trusted organizations.

Which image formats work best?

JPG photos from your phone camera work best.

Final Thoughts

A clean ID PDF takes five steps: take clear photos, check them, compress if needed, convert, and check the result. Add a short purpose note and share it only with people you trust.
